UPDATE OF THE COLIPA EYE IRRITATION TASK FORCE STRATEGY AND PROGRAMME FOR DEVELOPMENT OF IN VITRO METHODS.
Colipa (European Cosmetics Association) is conducting an eye irritation programme for development of in vitro methods to replace the Draize rabbit eye test (now banned for evaluating cosmetic ingredients). This programme is focused on identification of new in vitro test systems/endpoints that use a thorough understanding of mechanisms of eye injury/recovery to predict human ocular responses to chemical exposure. The core approach to achieve this is based on optimisation of existing in vitro assays through applied research and method refinement. The applied research programme focuses on availability of models that use Depth of Injury (DoI)/recovery as a mechanistic basis for eye irritation.
